•Language variation and standardization.
•Phonological, morphological, and syntactic changes to the language.
•The Great Vowel Shift (and the Great Great Vowel Shift Game!).

Week 13: Present-Day English...at last!
Nov 24-26

Paper due date #2 is Monday, November 24
Read Baugh and Cable, chapter 10. Discussion topics:

•Social and political impacts on language development.
•The sounds, structure, and vocabulary of Modern English.
•English in the United States and Britain.
No class on Wednesday–Happy Thanksgiving!


Week 14: Last week of classes before final exams; present-day and American English. 
Dec 01-03

Last paper due date is Monday, December 01.
("Zero-tolerance" day! :-)
